A few decades ago, a manager's job was to find a record label for the artist and ride off their marketing budgets and structure.
Today, we operate in a fast paced market driven by the internet and social media. With more independent labels popping up and running a lean operation. There are now artists who can build an audience and sell music directly to their followers through direct access to digital stores, tours and merchandising. This level of independence means an unknown artist can build an audience and decide if they would rather stay independent like Macklemore or sign a deal like Wale. Both did a great job surviving independently regardless of the paths they eventually took.
This dynamic has greatly changed the industry and ultimately, the role of the Manager... So, the Question is what is the role of the Manager?
I'd say, it is Business Development! The new role of a talent manager is to identify opportunities and create or develop revenue streams through these opportunities.
